PRESS RELESE: Battery Solutions and NextEnergy Partner on EGLE Grant to Bring Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling Opportunities to Michigan

Battery recycling leader Battery Solutions and the sustainability-focused group NextEnergy to support Michigan’s development of electric vehicle battery recycling.

April 20, 2021 – Wixom, MI: Battery Solutions, LLC. and NextEnergy have kicked off a new project funded by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) centered around evaluating the Michigan’s electric vehicle (EV) battery supply chain for collection, analysis, remanufacturing, reuse, and recycling. This assessment will include areas such as battery capacity and secondary use. The six-stage project aims to catalog the current EV recycling infrastructure in Michigan and identify opportunities for growth.

Engaging industry partners will be a huge step forward as the automotive market moves toward a fully electric model. Ultimately, the two organizations aim to provide recommendations to EGLE by February of 2022, strengthening Michigan’s position in recycling and secondary use for EV batteries.

“All-electric vehicles accelerate our move to a cleaner and more efficient future. Second-life battery use and battery recycling are key items to address with this move. NextEnergy is excited to partner with Battery Solutions to help position Michigan as a leader in this stage of the electric vehicle value-chain,” said the company’s President & CEO, James Saber.
