It has been a busy month for the team at NextEnergy!

Our smart mobility deployment with SmartCone, the winner of our NextChallenge Smart Cities competition, is now live in the city of Grosse Pointe Park with their AutoGuardian solution.

The NextChallenge Smart Cities program sought innovative solutions from around the world to compete for the opportunity to deploy technologies in southeastern Michigan.

The main goals for NextChallenge SmartCities are:

  1. To build relationships between industry and city leaders
  2. Deploy promising solutions in real-world settings
  3. Identify and create additional value from the deployment learnings.

Through the management of the competition and by leveraging our experience in developing and managing public private partnerships, the goals for NextChallenge SmartCities are being met with SmartCone and the City of Grosse Pointe Park.

The AutoGuardian solution has been deployed within two intersections that are adjacent to two schools and a popular commercial and entertainment district within the city. The system is providing traffic data insight to public safety including the speed of vehicles, amount of people/activations utilizing these two crosswalks, while simultaneously using machine learning and their sensor fusion software for object classification and detection of pedestrians entering a zone. In addition, when a pedestrian enters the crosswalk, the AutoGuardian system sends a signal to automatically set off rapid flashing beacons, bringing immediate attention and visibility to oncoming motorists that the crosswalk is in use improving the safety of children and families going to school.

Please check out the NextChallenge page on our website for more information and a video highlighting the deployment.

Also this month, we completed our three-year LiTES program with DTE Energy, Consumers Energy and the DJATC with a webinar of our findings and submission of our final report to the US DOE. Please check out the LiTES page under our Featured Programs. Here you’ll be able to download our final reports and access other program materials and news.

In March, our team will be participating at the Climate Leadership Conference, Microgrid Global Innovation Forum, and the Net Zero Build Summit. Please reach out to connect with us at these events or as always, feel free to reach out to me directly.
