Michigan Mobility Funding Platform

Overview

Mobility startups have access to more than $1 million in funding through the Michigan Mobility Funding Platform, thanks to a statewide program that provides mobility companies with more and better opportunities to validate and prove new technologies in Michigan.

The Michigan Mobility Funding Platform (MMFP) funds innovative mobility pilot projects of varying sizes that provide mobility solutions in Michigan communities.

Companies are required to partner with at least one of the following public or private entities in Michigan to be eligible for a grant: a community organization, municipality, government agency (e.g., Michigan Department of Transportation), county, supplier, employer, and/or other Michigan stakeholders.

Individual grant amounts vary and a match is required by the participant’s committed partners.

Our Work

NextEnergy supports the State of Michigan and its mobility-related efforts as the program manager of the Michigan Mobility Funding Platform.

Our team of experienced professionals and technical experts assists the Office of Future Mobility and Electrification with the grant application vetting process, acts as the fiduciary in grant funding, and collaborates with startups and partners to facilitate real-world deployments. Since launching in September 2021, nearly 30 real-world deployment grants and 19 test-site grants were awarded through the MMFP. NextEnergy also helped to support $2.4 million in awards to 26 other real-world deployment grants through the PlanetM Mobility Grant program, which ran prior to the launch of the Michigan Mobility Funding Platform from 2018 to 2020.

Focus Areas

The Michigan Mobility Funding Platform seeks to provide outcomes in three key focus areas:

  • Sustainable Futures: Improve environmental sustainability by encouraging electric vehicle (EV) adoption and EV charging infrastructure buildout.
  • Equitable Futures: Alleviate mobility barriers and increase access to affordable and reliable transportation options.
  • Multimodal Transportation: Modernize existing transportation systems and keep Michigan at the forefront across all connected and autonomous transportation modes.
